Saudi Arabia’s ambitious futuristic city project, Neom, is facing major uncertainty after reports emerged that parts of the massive development have been halted or significantly slowed down.

The project, strongly backed by Mohammed bin Salman, was designed to transform a large desert region into a high-tech urban hub powered by innovation, tourism, and renewable energy.

Neom became one of the world’s most talked-about megaprojects after plans were revealed for “The Line,” a futuristic linear city stretching across the desert with no cars, no streets, and fully smart infrastructure.

However, sources familiar with the project say financial pressures, construction challenges, and shifting economic priorities have forced Saudi officials to reconsider parts of the development timeline.

Several international companies involved in construction and planning are reportedly reviewing their roles as costs continue to rise. Analysts have also questioned whether the original vision could realistically be completed within the proposed schedule.

Saudi Arabia launched Neom as a centerpiece of its Vision 2030 plan, aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on oil and building a modern economy driven by technology, tourism, and investment.

Despite reports of delays and scaled-back targets, Saudi officials continue to publicly support the project and insist that development is still moving forward in phases.

The uncertainty surrounding Neom has sparked global debate about the future of large-scale megaprojects and whether such ambitious urban experiments can succeed in difficult economic conditions.

Experts say the coming months will be critical in determining whether Neom can recover momentum or face deeper setbacks.
